MIPC students, Y2 Electrical Technology conducted a study trip to Mukungwa I Hydropower Plant, located in Musanze District, Northern Province, Rwanda.

Mukungwa I Hydropower Plant is one of Rwanda’s earliest and most vital hydro-electric power stations, forming a key part of the national energy infrastructure.
• Commissioned: 1982 (Rehabilitated and upgraded several times, latest in 2019)
• Installed Capacity: 12 MW (2 × 6 MW Francis turbines)
The main objectives of the study trip were to:

• Provide students with hands-on experience in hydro-electric power generation.
• Demonstrate the operation and control of synchronous generators and turbine systems.
• Observe real-world applications of electro-mechanical energy conversion.
• Understand SCADA, protection, and safety systems used in hydropower plants.
•Strengthen students’ appreciation of renewable energy technologies and grid integration principles.
The study visit to Mukungwa Hydropower Plant was a successful educational experience linking theory with real-world engineering practice.
